A Cotton Vintage Zabuton: Hand Stitched
ca. mid to late twentieth century
19" x 19" x 2", 48 cm x 48 cm x 5 cm
five pieces are available: each is very similar to one another and each in almost un-worn condition
This zabuton or a traditional seating cushion, is made in the tradtional, Japanese method of what appears to be hand loomed cotton cloth.
The cloth covering the cushion is hand stitched; the cushion is filled with a heavy, cotton batting, which is customary and which, of course, will flatten over time and with use.
The dark color which is the base of the elegant plaid is hard to pin down: it is a kind of deep black-blue. The check pattern is shot through with pink, orange, blue-green and white.
A lovely thing, and although it does not show much age, the care that went into the fabrication and construction of this zabuton is impressive.
