A Contemporary Hand Dyed Indian Cotton Square #4: People Tree
contemporary
25" x 24", 63.5 cm x 61
This is a square of lightweight cotton that was designed by the innovative textile design studio based in New Delhi, India, called People Tree.
People Tree's textile designs draw on traditional Indian dyeing techniques often using mud-resist or block print, but their original designs, which spring from conventional methods, always show startling innovation and are often eccentric in nature.
This square of cloth is machine finished and appears to be dyed in natural indigo and perhaps madder. It also appears to be made from a traditional block printing technique, the combination of off-register blue curved shapes against a filed of madder-like red is beautiful, especially given that that half the cloth is stamped with large-scale black colored floral forms.
Wonderful.
