A Complete, Intact Pieced and Patched Futon Cover: Threadbare Areas
early twentieth century
60" x 35", 152.5 cm x 89 cm
This is a complete, intact, patched and mended cotton futon cover that is pieced together from re-purposed lengths of cloth, most of which are taken from kimono.
The futon cover is shown inside-out in order to highlight the hand stitched seams, the piecing and the patching. The cloth that comprises this futon cover is threadbare in areas and also shows some tears, some of which are illustrated here.
One of the reasons for offering this intact futon cover is to be able to show what one looked like: as these pieces were made in the home for personal use there are quite a few variations on construction, but in this case we see one that follows a fairly standard guideline of making a duvet cover-like piece that has ties and slits to accommodate stuffing.
This is a charming piece with some cultural or historical interest--and certainly for the user today there are infinite possibilities.
