A Collection of 9 Pieces of Hemp and Ramie Cloth: Varied Sizes
early twentieth century, mainly
longest piece: 57" x 13", 145 cm x 33 cm
shortest piece: 18 1/2" x 6", 47 cm x 5.25 cm
This is a wonderful rag tag group of hemp and ramie cloth of various sizes and weights. There are nine pieces in all, from a sliver of undyed, heavy hemp cloth to a rather long piece of indigo dyed woven hemp (which may or may not be of Japanese origin).
Also to be found is a nice fragment of sky blue kaya or mosquito netting and a lovely piece of Edo komon, a small figured, katazome dyed cloth which was popular during the final years of the Edo Period.
A great group of good looking hemp and ramie cloth.
