A Checkerboard Sakiori Obi: Rag Woven Kimono Sash
mid twentieth century
96" x 5", 244 cm x 12.75 cm
Shown here is a sakiori obi, which is a traditional kimono sash that has been woven from a weft of shredded, recycled cottons.
The effect of this sakiori obi is of a regulated, well-patterned, checkerboard in a slightly small scale. The weft yarns are rag and they seem to be taken from a patterned cloth whose color tones are red and greenish. The warp yarns seem to be of red and grey color.
The overall color of this obi is cast with a reddish tone, the light and dark checkerboards both tinged in red.
A beautifully pattened sakiori obi in good, well-used condition appropriate with its age.
Beautiful.
