A Brightly Toned Rustic Obi: Blocks of Saturated Color
mid twentieth century
120" x 10 1/2", 305 cm x 26.5 cm
This brightly colored obi or kimono sash gives the appearance of being woven from a rag weft but its rich texture comes from a silky weft of thick yarns and a cotton warp.
The weft yarns are saturated colors in turquoise, orange and yellow; the warp yarns are the same colors and are of cotton.
The result is a large-scale checked effect in high-volume colors with one end showing two rows of gold threads, pictured here.
Because of the unabashedly "happy" quality of the colors which compose this obi we can deduce that it was meant to be worn by a young woman.
In good condition with no apparent damage.
Unusual--and fun.
