A Boro Panel taken from a Futon Cover: Beautiful Arrangement of Patches

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
65" x 12 1/2", 165 cm x 31.5 cm

This is a length of patched and mended cotton that once served as a portion of a futon cover. This attractively designed boro length is hand stitched from what is undoubtedly a recycled cotton kimono: the base cloth indicates this clearly by its narrow striped pattern.

Overlaid onto this are bold patches of indigo dyed cottons, the placement of which and the distribution of color tones of which create a beautifully unintentional abstract art work.

The cloth on this piece is old and each piece is consistently old to the other which is something good to find in an old boro textile.

Shown here is both back and front for a thorough appraisal of the piece which is valuable for its old cloth and its wonderful design.
