A Boro Noragi: Patched and Tattered
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
25" x 38", 63.5 cm x 96.5 cm
This is a charming and tattered, short, boro noragi, which is entirely hand stitched from hand woven, indigo dyed cottons. And it has seen a lot of work and wear during its lifetime in the service of work.
The base cloth is a lovely, small checked cotton, which can be seen in the close-up details shown on this post. As the coat is shown inside-out, the interior patching is very obvious, and these are predominately indigo dyed cotton. On the shoulder area is a layer of undyed cotton cloth which bears some lovely, black, mending stitches.
With tattered sleeves and much abrasion, this little coat is boro gem, with a great deal of character and charm.
It is entirely hand stitched.
