A Boldly Designed Hanten: Wide Striped Jacket

This startlingly graphically designed indigo dyed cotton hanten is completely hand stitched--and it is resist dyed in bold, horizontally-based wide stripes.

Coats like these were made in quantity and served as some form of uniform, either for employees of a particular business or for those participating in a shrine or temple festival.

This hanten is in quite good condition as it seems hardly used, if it all. The original place of origin of this piece is not known but there are cursive letters taken from the western alphabet on the red stripe at the top of the back of the coat as well as on the lapels in front.

The cotton is woven rather heavily and the visual impact of this coat is immediate.
