The large-scale, resist dyed family crests--five of them--which are emblazoned on this garment tell us that it belongs to the late Edo period.

The family crests represents stylized stars.

The simplicity of this garment with its richly dyed, deeply toned indigo color, its nicely hand woven cloth made from hand spun yarns and its fine form all add up to something that is intrinsically beautiful for its materials and its making; it does not rely on decoration or embellishment to augment its beauty.

The quality of the cloth--and its fine condition--and the quality of the old dye used on this garment are quiet and spectacular.

This is an extremely handsome thing and one whose pared-down features and directness in making are its treasures.
