A Very Large and Beautifully Patched Furoshiki: High Visual Interest
mid twentieth century
69" x 65", 175 cm x 165 cm
When seen in person, this magnificent--and very large--pieced and mended furoshiki could easily elicit a reaction of "wow."
The scale and the size of this traditional wrapping cloth are impressive but what is more interesting, or what works in such concert with these characteristics, is the magnificent and unintended artistry in the placement of the patches.
For example, the central indigo patch and those on the four corners are each there to provide reinforcement to the furoshiki, however what we see is some kind of wonderful visual symmetry.
Then look at the construction of the piece which is all hand stitched from several textile sources: the patching and the stitching to these areas is rich in variety and utility.
Displayed on the wall this wonderful object has a real presence and functions beautifully as artwork. It is just splendid.
