A Beautiful White on Blue Shibori Kimono: Deep Indigo and Beautiful Cotton
early twentieth century
53" x 48", 134.5 cm x 122 cm
This is a stunningly beautiful indigo dyed cotton shibori kimono, not just for the depth of color of the indigo dye and for the beauty of the shibori pattern, but also for the quality of the cotton cloth, which is fairly heavy weight and appears to be hand woven. This is a plus.
The overall visual effect of this kimono is striking for the symmetry and order of its shibori dyed design and for the contrast of white-on-blue.
The high quality of the cotton of this kimono is an indication that it may have some good age, that it was made sometime in the early twentieth century.
The condition is used and good; there are no noticeable stains or flaws, just some evidence of wear, as can be seen on the detail photos here that show the purple cloth that finishes the meeting of the sleeve to the bodice.
Really impressive and beautiful, and with good age.
