A Beautiful Length of Striped Cotton: Complex
ca. late nineteenth century
63" x 13", 160 cm x 33 cm

This is a really gorgeous, lush and beautifully woven length of woven cotton striped fabric.
This piece is taken from a futon cover, and the central striped area is beautifully designed: a wide, channel of asagi or pale blue cotton which is punctuated by narrower stripes of dark indigo, benibana or safflower dyed, and two narrow stripes woven from variegated warp yarns which have been dyed in the kasuri technique.
A fantastically handsome length of old, hand woven Japanese cotton.
