A Beautiful Length of Complex Plaid Cotton: Kasuri Details
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
63" x 13 1/2", 160 cm x 34 cm
This is an extremely handsome length of indigo dyed, hand woven cotton cloth which was probably taken from a futon cover.
The coloration is subtle and varied and is interesting to the eye. The pattern is based on what can be described as two plaids: a blue-on-blue under pattern which is overlaid by a lighter colored one whose warp yarns are shot through with indigo and white kasuri or ikat yarns. Just beautiful.
The length is tightly woven and is in very good, used condition.
A simply beautiful length of hand loomed cotton and one that calls to mind daily life in old Japan.
Just wonderful.
