19 yards or 17.4 meters of Hemp Mosquito Netting: Hand Plied Warp and Weft Yarns

$425.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
19 yards x 14", 17.4 m x 35.5 cm

This is a generously sized bolt of hand plied, hand woven hemp or ramie cloth that measures a whopping 19 yards or 17.4 meters.

It is a spectacular find for its good condition and for the fact that each of the bast fiber yarns that are used to weave this mosquito netting is hand plied, both on the warp and the weft.

The last detail photo here shows this clearly: you can see that yarns are twisted around each other which indicates that this was hand done--intensely laborious and highly skilled!

The color is a deep shade of green which is a traditional color for mosquito netting in Japan. In the Edo period it was thought that green color deflects lightning which is why green was chosen to color the cloth that hangs around one's futon.

This is a truly wonderful thing to own--and it is so rich in potential that any possible application would find its source in this.
