A Length of Overdyed Katazome: Image as Texture

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
33 1/4" x 13", 84.5 cm x 33 cm

This is an interesting length of katazome dyed cotton: the repeat pattern is so small that it is not an image per se but rather it appears to be surface texture.

The base cloth is dyed a pale indigo tone; the reverse side of this cloth shows narrow, vertical lines. The face shows a grid over which the "textured" dyed surface appears.

There are small stains to the surface some of which are illustrated here: please know that when seen by eye these stains are not very apparent (but they are there). They do not detract from the overall visual enjoyment of this piece which is interesting for its unusual dyeing and design.

Subtle and interestingly conceived.
