late nineteenth, early twentieth century

This richly colored, indigo dyed shibori cotton kimono or yukata is not only subtle in all its details, it also has very good age and is hand stitched of very good quality, old cotton.

The tied shibori, referred to as miura, is in an allover pattern and is done in two tones of deep indigo. The good texture of the old cotton enhances this pattern by giving it some surface appeal, a trait that can only be appreciated by seeing this piece in person and feeling the hand woven quality of the cotton.

The color is deep and rich and because this garment was hand dyed over 100 years ago there is a bit of subtle unevenness to the tone, but, again, this is almost impossible to discern.

This is a really wonderful old shibori dyed kimono and one that is highly recommended.
