This beautifully colored and unused country textile is one-half of an unmade sakiori sodenashi, a sleeveless style work coat that is woven from shredded cloth.

Two identical pieces such as this one comprise a sodenashi: if you look at one of the detail photos accompanying this posting you will see that at midpoint on this piece, on the selvedge side, there is a small section that is not rag woven: it is here that this length would have been cut to create the bend over the shoulder and allowed a collar to be formed.

White cotton yarn is the warp thread; the weft is indigo dyed cotton primarily.

The weft was obtained from used garments and bedding, which were shredded to create a durable yarn.  Note some of the more variegated blue passages of weft material: this area shows the use of kasuri or ikat cloth in the making of the yarn.

Just a wonderful piece of weaving and a real reminder of what kind of clothing was worn in old Japan.

Recommended.
