An Graphically Interesting Indigo Dyed Cotton Katazome Length: Maple Leaves
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
26" x 12 1/2", 66 cm x 31.5 cm
What a fanciful rendering of maple leaves is seen on this katazome dyed fragment of indigo cotton. The effect of falling leaves is stylized and beautiful as is the treatment of the details of the leaves: some are checkerboard while others show two treatments of faux shibori.
The base tone of indigo blue is beautiful in its purity of tone--it shows as kind of cobalt color. However the entire fragment of cloth does show some fading from wear and some ingrained creases, but these defects to the cloth do not mask its inherent beauty nor does it mar the fabulous inventive graphic treatment of these stylized maple leaves.
A simply marvelous fragment of katazome dyed cloth.
