A Reversible Patched Boro Fragment: Good Age and Hand Spun Cotton
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
41" x 19", 104 cm x 48 cm
This is a very beautiful, indigo dyed cotton boro section from a futon cover. What makes is really wonderful, aside from the obvious aesthetic features, is that it is made from hand spun, hand loomed cotton, and all the patches on the piece are contemporary to each other. And they are all old.
Another marvelous aspect to this lovely boro cloth is that it is equally interesting on both of its sides: front and back have very different qualities, but each is very interesting from the point of view of visual interest and also how it shows traditional mending techniques.
The indigo color is rich and is made more beautiful because of the way the hand spun cotton yarns show it off.
With great age, this is a very good boro futon cover fragment.
