An Overdyed Katazome Length: Shibori and Kasuri Base
early to mid twentieth century
35 1/2" x 12", 90 cm x 30.5 cm
This is a very interesting length of katazome dyed cotton because it is hand stitched from three separate pieces, two of which are blue-on-white kasuri and one of which is arashi shibori.
The katazome pattern was dyed over kasuri and shibori, which is little-seen but understandable in the context of old Japan where frugality and repurposing of materials was an intrinsic part of life.
This cloth is a very tiny bit threadbare in certain parts with small areas of loss here and there, very difficult to see. More than anything this is a study piece as it is not common to find over dyed katazome cotton.
