An Indigo Dyed Piece Constructed Work Kimono: Beautifully Unsymmetrical
ca. mid twentieth century
47 1/2" x 50", 120.5 cm x 127 cm
This is a very lovely, piece constructed long cotton work coat, sewn from a variety of hand woven, cotton cloth, a good percentage of which is kasuri or ikat.
There are over 30 distinct pieces of cloth that are stitched together to create this coat; it is fully lined in hand loomed indigo dyed cotton and it seems not to have been worn, and if so, it has been worn lightly.
Wonderful is that this coat is pieced together with just a taste of asymmetry: there is a vague symmetry of placement of the pieces of cloth, however with the staggered arrangement of sewn fragments there comes with this a rustic sense that captures the beauty of this coat.
Just a fantastic looking thing.
Very recommended.
