An Indigo Dyed Hemp Vest: Tattered and Patched

$115.00 USD

early twentieth century
29" x 18", 73.5 cm x 45.5 cm

This is a tattered, patched and weathered indigo dyed hemp work vest which shows a gorgeous patina from what must have been years of wear.

The cloth is heavily woven and the indigo color has been softened to a dull, medium-toned blue, probably due to exposure to sunlight and to a great deal of abrasion from manual labor.

The collar portion shows a snip of indigo dyed cotton reinforcement and the back of the vest shows applied, indigo dyed hemp patches: the bodice of the garment is marked by small snags and holes which are indicated on the various detail photos which accompany this post.

Some areas on the seams and the finishing have come loose, which is to be expected from a work garment that is almost 100 years old.

A really lovely work coat from old Japan, this vest is an unassuming beauty.

Recommended.
