An Exuberantly Embroidered Gujarati Bag: Saurashtra Region
ca. mid twentieth century
18" x 12", 46 cm x 30.5 cm
This is a richly and exuberantly embroidered cotton bag from India's Saurashtra region which is situated in the state of Gujarat.
Please know that the bag's strap is a new addition and can easily be removed if so desired.
But it is the body of the bag which is of interest as it is magnificently hand stitched using cotton threads that are dyed in sun-bright colors-- green, orange, fuschia, blue and yellow--and which is studded with small, inset mirrors and decorated with pompoms on the sides and bottom.
The workmanship and the condition of this bag are both excellent. Of course the bag is not newly made and has been worn in its native Gujarat, but the overall appearance of the bag is very good.
A spectacularly and beautifully realized bag with stunning embroidery and high-volume personality.
