An Extremely Long and Wide Maku or Curtain: 5 1/2 Yards or 5.25 Meters
mid twentieth century
206" x 75", 523 cm x 190.5 cm
This maku or curtain is mammoth in size, as the measurements here note.
This extremely long and wide curtain would have been used at a Shinto shrine or a Buddhist temple during some kind of festival or on a special occasion. Written on the maku is the name of a donor who contributed money on this occasion, as well as the date of the even being commemorated. Also, there are two mon or crests on the piece, stenciled in black: the crests are both large diamonds that are comprised of nine smaller diamonds.
The piece is machine stitched and shows wear and some faint staining and fading.
A huge textile and one that has many applications for artworks, home decor or scenic decoration.
