An Asagi and White Checked Boro Panel: Soft Blues
ca. late nineteenth century
65" x 13 1/4", 165 cm x 33.5 cm
In person this length of blue-on-white checked cloth is more beautiful than the accompanying photographs can portray.
The cloth is very soft in color; the cotton yarns are hand spun; the indigo dyed yarns are beautifully faded and are uneven in their coloration. Subtle and extremely beautiful.
As well, it is not exceptionally easy to find checked or plaid cloth in such light tones, the reason probably is that light colors show dirt more easily than dark colors.
This length is composed of two pieces of different cloth which have been hand stitched together. There are five patches affixed to the surface.
There is some fain, very muted staining to the top of the piece and about 10 small holes that dot the surface from top to bottom.
