A Wonderfully Repaired Kaya Fragment: Open Weave Hemp
early twentieth century
75" x 13 1/4", 190.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a wonderful length of rustic, indigo dyed hemp cloth.
This is a panel from a kaya or mosquito netting, hence the very loose, open weave of the cloth.
The color is a very warm green; the hemp yarns are wiry and have taken the dye in a slightly uneven fashion, which adds to the country appeal of this length. The hemp cloth itself is well-worn and is threadbare in some areas; note that this length is hand stitched from two distinct pieces, the smaller piece at the top of the length bearing some very picturesque patching and mending.
A very good old, boro kaya.
