A Wonderfully "Modern" Length of Shibori: Two Joined Pieces of Cotton
ca. early twentieth century
66" x 12", 167.5 cm x 30 cm
This piece of indigo dyed Akita shibori cotton is beautiful and odd: we are not sure what the shibori-dyed design motif is, but whatever it is, it is attractive in its modernist appeal and its stark white-on-blue contrast.
The length is sewn down the center from two pieces; what also can be seen is a repair to the middle of the bottom quarter area of the piece.
The cotton is hand loomed, the indigo is botanical and very rich--almost velvety--in appearance. The white, undyed areas of cotton are bright.
This is a really attractive piece of old shibori.
