Often clients are asking about noren, especially boro noren, and if this is also your interest please consider this one.

It is a wonderful example of a boro noren, a noren being a door covering that is used both for privacy or delineating spaces within a building. Noren that are emblazoned with a name or logo are used as shop signs and are hung outside buildings to indicate when they are open for business.

This one is made of beautifully woven, indigo dyed hemp material. As you can see from the accompanying detail photos there is are subtle, warp-based stripes woven into the cloth.

The color is a warm blue which veers more toward blue than green.

It is composed of three panels that are hand stitched together; each one is hemmed by hand. Likewise the hanging loops are also fashioned and stitched on by hand.

The hemp cloth is beautifully faded and there are four cotton mending patches that stud the surface of the noren and add visual interest and character to it.

As can be seen on the accompanying detail photos there is a coin-sized hole on the far right panel.

Of beautiful, composition, material, age and proportion, this is a wonderful old noren and one that will give a lot of pleasure over time.

Very recommended.
