A Very Long Resist Dyed Textile: Hanabishi
early to mid twentieth century
90" x 25", 228.5 cm x 63.5 cm
This very long cotton cloth is hand stitched from four pieces.
It shows an over-sized resist dyed flower, or hanabishi ("diamond-flower") on the right-hand side with a sliver of another one, possibly from the same flower, on the left-hand side.
The green-blue dye is most likely natural and there is fading and wear to the piece on both its sides; there is more light fading to the reverse side than to this one shown here.
Still, this is a very good-sized length of old cotton with great graphics and good age.
