A Very Long Hand Spun Cotton Boro Cloth: Heavy Wear and Surface Patina
late nineteenth century
84" x 13 3/4", 213.5 cm x 35 cm
This is a very long piece of attractively detailed, handwoven cotton which was taken from a futon cover.
The large checked pattern is made from undyed cotton and indigo, the indigo having been burnished to a soft, blue tone.
Overall the length is in sturdy condition, however the entire surface is embedded with ingrained, light grey staining from years of use and for years of not being washed (it has been thoroughly washed since being purchased in Japan.)
The general feeling of this old length of cotton is pleasant and it is mended with a few patches cut from the same cloth.
Really lovely.
