A Very Large Reversible Kasuri Boro Futon Cover: Wonderful Patches Front and Back
mid twentieth century
78" x 45", 198 cm x 114.25 cm
This is a dazzling and large boro textile: it is a futon cover whose base is a large-scale, beautifully toned kasuri cotton cloth.
Both sides of this boro futon cover are visually interesting and the lead photo, shown here, would have been its proper, "public-facing" side. Have a look at the great variety of patched on the front of this piece: you can see various fragments of kasuri and katazome dyed cottons, the scale of patterns and the scale of the sizes of the patches varying in such a way as to give the surface of this futon cover a remarkable visual presence.
The back of this piece, too, is patched, and although it is of a completely different character than that of the front, it has a great deal of appeal.
In some areas the base cotton is threadbare and there are a few holes which can be seen on the accompanying detail photos.
Still, this large, beautiful, hand stitched boro futon cover is something wonderful and is rich in graphic and textural appeal.
