{"product_id":"a-very-large-piece-constructed-drawstring-bag-yamagata-prefecture","title":"A Very Large Piece Constructed Drawstring Bag: Yamagata Prefecture","description":"\u003cp\u003elate nineteenth, early twentieth century\u003cbr\u003e10 1\/2\" x 15\" x 15\", 26.5 cm x 38 cm x 38 cm\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a very large or oversized hand stitched drawstring bag, sometimes referred to as a\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003ekomebukuro\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eor \"rice bag\" since similar, smaller types were used to carry offerings of dried rice or beans to temple or shrine festivals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular piece was probably not a\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003ekomebukuro\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ebut more than likely it is  a bag intended to have been used every day for practical purposes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is composed of almost 30 or so individual pieces of hand woven cotton cloth. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMost of the cloth is subtle or somber in color and tone, however these pieces are foiled by bold, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.srithreads.com\/collections\/katazome\"\u003e\u003cem\u003ekatazome \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003epatterns and, in the case of the grey toned figured \u003cem\u003ekatazome\u003c\/em\u003e cloth, this particular one no doubt dates to the mid nineteenth century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cloth on the bag no doubt dates from the Meiji era (1868-1912) however the bag may have been hand stitched a bit later.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was found in the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/thehiddenjapan.com\/yamagata-shonai\/\"\u003eShonai\u003c\/a\u003e region of Yamagata prefecture.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe hefty drawstring is slipped through a series of loops of string and the drawstring seems original to the bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA beautifully unusual thing for its good size, for its age and for the wonderful combination of cottons used to create this bag--and do not overlook the bottom of the bag which is intricately pieced of many small fragments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRecommended.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust wonderful for its variety of cloth and its large size.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Sri","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":45824172589242,"sku":null,"price":375.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0070\/9422\/files\/RiceBag4.jpg?v=1777986584","url":"https:\/\/www.srithreads.com\/products\/a-very-large-piece-constructed-drawstring-bag-yamagata-prefecture","provider":"Sri","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
