A Very Complex Katazome Design: Resist Dyed Feathers
early twentieth century
33" x 13 3/4", 84 cm x 35 cm
This is an extremely unusual katazome dyed cloth: its pattern of crowded, decorative feathers is beautiful but very rare, and that said, this panel of cloth is a treat for the eyes.
The pattern is based on an all-over effect. The details shown on each of the feathers are amazingly varied and ingenious: three tones--white, pale blue and dark blue--comprise the complex design which is rendered mainly in small dots, lending a "sparkling" effect to the design.
Four mending stitches are applied to the back of this piece and on the final detail photo which accompanies this post you can see an "L"-shaped mend to the front of the cloth.
A superbly rare and very beautiful length of katazome dyed cotton.
