A Two Panel Boro Fragment: Wonderful Large Scale Katazome
early twentieth century
31" x 26", 78.75 cm x 66 cm
This is a lovely old boro cloth that shows a fantastic, resist dyed pattern on its base cloth. Each of the two sides of this cloth is interesting to look at, the large scale katazome pattern is bold and graphic.
The repaired side of the cloth shows four patches and a bit of staining: the reverse side of the cloth that more clearly shows the katazome pattern is stained along the bottom and on its two top corners. The stains, however, do not detract from the beauty of the design, which, in this case, is slightly unusual.
The cotton is also of very good quality and the yarns used to weave it appear to be hand spun.
A gorgeous and graphic fragment of katazome cotton and one whose repairs greatly add to its charm.
