This is a group of long, individual strands of twined, recycled paper, each length of which has been twisted into a durable cord.

Japanese paper is made of very long bast fibers so the paper is more like a non-woven fabric than the brittle cellulose paper we use in the West.  Therefore, Japanese paper is quite strong and durable, which is why strings such as these are so useful.

A beautiful object, both collectible and handy.
