A Superb, Pieced Cotton Noragi: Muted Plaids and Stripes

$475.00 USD

early twentieth century
38 1/4" x 48", 97.5 cm x 122 cm

Please do not over look this noragi: its tones are dark and your eyes may need to adjust to the subtleties of the colors and patterns in this coat, but the time spent is well worth it.

This work jacket is hand pieced and hand stitched from recycled kimono cottons, all of them dark colored small plaids and narrow stripes, which is in keeping with traditional custom for daily wear in old Japan.  The eye and the hand that created this piece was just fantastic as it shows real artistry in its skill of sewing and in whatever aesthetic choices went into arranging the pieced surface.

The coat is lined in recycled indigo dyed cottons; the lining amply shows the wonderful sashiko stitching that quilts together the exterior and the interior of this noragi.

In every way this beautiful coat is well worth collecting, and, as it is in very good, used condition, it is still very wearable, should you wish to use it as a garment.

Superb.
