A Striped Boro Length: Beautifully Arranged Patches
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
56" x 13", 142 cm x 33 cm
This is a length of wide woven striped indigo dyed cotton that has been faded to beautiful soft tones. The design of the striped pattern is slightly irregular from right to left which adds to the visual interest of this length.
But what really makes this something to see is the arrangement of patches on the length, about 13 in all, each of which is in bold contrast to the base cloth.
The way these patches play against the wide stripes is undisputedly interesting to see and the contrast between the solid, dark patches and pale toned background is worthy of equal mention.
As is often the case with old textiles this length is lightly starched.
Just beautiful!
