A Small Lacquered Wooden Dish: "Thread" or Ito in Kanji
mid twentieth century
1" x 4 3/4", 2.5 cm x 12 cm
These lightweight, wooden, lacquered shallow dishes show a good deal of wood grain; they are lightly lacquered. But what it is interesting about them is that each small dish shows the Japanese kanji, or Chinese character for "thread" or "ito."
It could have been that these plates were somehow associated with a textile company or atelier, but as this is speculation it is difficult to say.
However, it is clear that each of these plates bears the hand painted "ito" kanji and for this reason they are presented here.
