A Small Boro Fragment: Furoshiki Corner and Cobbled Pieces
early twentieth century
51 1/2" x 17", 131 cm x 43 cm
This length of pieced, recycled indigo dyed cotton is hand stitched from six individual pieces.
What is notable in looking at it is that there is a triangle-shaped tag of a type often seen on the corner of furoshiki or traditional wrapping cloths. As well there is a resist dyed kanji on the bottom of the cloth, on the lower right-hand corner, and again this suggests that this fragment was taken from a furoshiki.
The cloth overall is scuffed and worn, not unusual for a boro textile--and do note the top seam is broken on the right side.
This is a lovely length of repurposed cloth with a good deal of visual--and tactile--interest.
