A Short Length of Stitched Katazome Cloth: Faded Tones
late nineteenth century
39 1/2" x 13 1/4", 100.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length composed of two pieces of the same indigo dyed katazome cloth which have been hand stitched together. The bottom positioned piece is more faded than the top piece which makes for an interesting tonal combination when the two are set together as they are here.
The resist dyed pattern is dense and delicate. The repeat is based on filigreed roundels that are set into an octagon pattern; the octagons are spaced by squares which also contain a floral motif.
The bottom piece is considerably more faded than the top piece and it also shows ingrained dirt and some yellowing which makes for further tonal contrast between the two piece as the top piece is more vibrant and is less worn.
