A Sankuzushi Plaid Cotton Length: Patches
early twentieth century
48" x 13", 122 cm x 33 cm
This is a lovely length of indigo dyed cotton that was taken from a futon cover.
The color is rich and the design of the plaid is striking, and there is an interesting detail to the plaid.
If you look at the intersection of the narrow white strips you will see they join in a kind of "basket weave" design. This type of woven design was very popular in the 19th century and it assumed many forms, from a detail as is found here to cloth that is woven entirely as basket weave.
The cloth shows three patches and a small hole, and the indigo blue is still very rich and sapphire-like.
Just lovely.
