A Sakiori Obi: Ragweave in Muted Lavenders and Mottled Tones
mid twentieth century
100" x 7", 254 cm x 18 cm
This is a interestingly colored sakiori obi, a sakiori obi being a rustic, traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cotton cloth as its weft yarn.
Its coloration is low-contrast yet variegated in an overall lavender tone.
The weft yarns are fed in blocks so as to create a somewhat regular striped pattern of rose, yellow, green, purple and some mottled passages going up the length.
The warp yarns are a medium toned grey cotton which softens the overall color tone of this obi. The condition is good and used.
This is a lovely folk textile in a fairly unusual color palette and a good example of a sakiori obi.
