A Sakiori Obi: Beautifully Muted Blues
ca. early to mid twentieth century
120" x 7 1/2", 305 cm x 19 cm
Shown here is a sakiori obi, a traditional kimono sash that has been woven from a pale grey cotton warp and a weft of shredded, recycled cottons.
The grey cotton warp lends a muted tint to this piece; the rag weft yarn is of ochre, blue and grey dyed cotton, so the end result is a pale or muted colored sakiori obi.
When worn, this obi has been folded laterally along its length, and the obi still shows a faint crease.
Overall, this sakiori obi is in very good condition, it seems free of holes and stains, and its color is soft and rich.
A lovely thing--and sakiori obis of this elegant and understated type and with this good age are increasingly hard to find in Japan.
