A Richly Patterned Light Toned Katazome Length: Floral Indigo Dyed Cotton

$120.00 USD

late nineteenth century
72" x 13 1/4", 183 cm x 33.5 cm

This length of katazome or stencil resist dyed cloth is composed of two pieces which have been hand stitched together.  The cloth is indigo dyed cotton.

Much of the panel is comprised of a fantastically beautiful piece of katazome cloth: it shows a very crowded light-toned, heavily resist dyed chrysanthemums that are rendered in tones of white and grey, mostly.  The drawing of the chrysanthemums is vivid and full of life--the pattern seems to have a forceful vitality that inhabits the length of cotton.

The top, darker, indigo dyed fragment is a much more standard katazome pattern and it, too, shows chrysanthemums, these, however, are much more stylized and starker in design than those of the piece below it.

This is a wonderful length of old cloth, most likely taken from a futon cover, and one which shows a kind of complex pattern not often seen on katazome dyed cotton.
