A Richly Patched and Layered Boro Panel: Old Cloth
late nineteenth through early twentieth century
58" x 11 1/2", 147.5 cm x 29 cm
Even though this is an irregularly-shaped, narrow and long sliver of cloth, it is an appealing boro. It has great merit for its desirable qualities: its age, its arrangement of patches, its good color and the ito aji or the thread flavor of the old, hand spun cotton yarns used to weave much of the indigo dyed cotton.
The pile-up of patches is gorgeous as is the color of this piece which is a faded, indigo blue that, when looking at the back, really reveals its hand spun cotton yarns.
Pore over the accompanying detail photos to see the wonderful details that create this humble but very beautiful old boro cloth.
