A Richly Colored and Patterned 19th Century Katazome Length: Tight Design
late nineteenth century
35 1/2" x 13 3/4", 90 cm x35 cm
This length of katazome dyed cotton is of excellent quality and should be considered by serious collectors of this type of cloth.
The pattern is a tight repeat of roundels and diagonally-oriented lattice work: the cloth shows little light fading and is dyed in indigo, a pale grey dye and a very pale ochre-toned dye.
The design is complex and there is a tessellated mood to it as it recalls tightly-fit tiles or some kind of richly detailed surface decoration.
For its complicated pattern, its three colors and its good condition, this length of katazome cloth is a treasure.
