A Length of Beautifully Executed Katazome Cotton: Paulownia and Trailing Vine
early twentieth century
47" x 12 1/2", 119.5 cm x 31.75 cm
This is a length of very beautiful katazome dyed cotton which seems to be unused.
Its color is a rich, true cobalt blue. The pattern which is both resisted on the cloth (the white areas) and stenciled directly onto the cloth (the black areas) is traditional: paulownia flowers are set against a field of karakusa which is trailing vine or arabesque.
The hand woven cotton is of a good weight and tightly woven. The contrast of white and black against the stunning blue ground is just beautiful.
A fabulously lovely length of katazome dyed cotton.
