A Resist Dyed Hemp Cloth: Unknown Function
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
12 1/2" x 28", 31.5 cm x 71 cm
This is a well-used, indigo dyed hemp or ramie length which is hand stitched on its two short sides and is resist dyed in the center.
The cloth is well-used and shows a rough patina and surface damage as can be seen on the accompanying detail photographs shown here.
When this piece was found on a sourcing trip to Japan, it was found as one of many identical pieces which indicates it had a specific purpose at the time of its manufacture. Unfortunately the original function of this piece has been lost to time and we can only admire it as a lovely, authentic textile from old Japan.
