A Resist Dyed and Sashiko Stitched Noren Panel: Wood Sorrel and Pine Bark
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
64" x 12 1/2", 162.5 cm x 32 cm
Shown here is one panel taken from a larger, multi-paneled, indigo cotton, resist dyed noren which is a kind of traditional curtain.
At its top the panel shows a family crest in the design of stylized wood sorrel. The geometric designs at the bottom of the panel are matsukawa bishi or the pine bark pattern. The two sides of this panel are back stitched in white cotton thread approximately half-way up the length.
The cloth is in good, used condition, with the undyed cotton showing some discoloration from wear, shown in detail on the accompanying photographs.
A wonderful length of old, resist dyed indigo cotton.
